Hollywood, the home of great movies, has long been seen as the central location where all great actors (and bad) find their way. This list is a collection of 100 of the best (and greatest) actors to star in Hollywood's movies, ranging from actors in Hollywood when movies were first produced, up until the actors starring in Hollywood movies, today.

Bear in mind that whilst scrolling down the list, this is a collection of what I believe to be the greatest actors (of all time), so as with any list of this type, they will always be based on opinions. Without further ado, here are Hollywood's best-in-the-business actors.

10 Greatest Hollywood Actors of the 21st Century

Ever since the crossover from the 20th Century to the 21st Century we have seen some great talent (actors) enter into Hollywood, but that isn't to say that the great actors from the 20th Century aren't still dominating the Hollywood scene.

Acting is something that is not measured in box office success, but rather in the talent and performance that the actor brings to their characters. Each and every actor listed below has shown substantial talent in movies released in the 21st Century, hence the reason why they have been chosen for a spot on our list.

Starting with the best actor, down to the least best, here are the best Hollywood movie actors working today.

1. Tom Hanks

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Cast Away (plays Chuck Noland, 2000)

Biggest box office 'hit': Toy Story 3 (voices Woody, 2010) - with a worldwide gross of $1.06 billion

Why Tom Hanks? -

Tom Hanks is the one actor we can all rely on to surprise us, no matter what role he is playing, and no matter what movie he is starring in. From the jaw-dropping performance as Chuck Noland in Cast Away (alongside his companion, Wilson), to the voice-over role as Woody in Toy Story (franchise), Hanks never disappoints. Hanks is a veteran actor, great when he began acting in Hollywood, and still plays great roles today. There is honestly, an account of zero bad movies/performances that we can think of for Hanks, which is odd considering most actors have at least one bad movie hidden in their closet.

2. Joaquin Phoenix

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Gladiator (plays Commodus, 2000)

Biggest box office 'hit': Gladiator (plays Commodus, 2000) - with a worldwide gross of $457.6 million

Why Joaquin Phoenix? -

Ever since the year, 2000, when Phoenix starred alongside Russell Crowe in Gladiator, it confirmed Phoenix and Crowe a place in Hollywood. Phoenix wowed audiences all around the world when he played the role of Commodus in Gladiator, the time we all hated him because his character was the bad guy (and that was the emotion we were supposed to feel towards him, as viewers watching the film). Then, as if he was born to be an actor in Hollywood movies, Phoenix began taking all of the right roles, starring in Signs (alongside co-star Mel Gibson), The Village (alongside co-stars William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver), and more recently, Her (alongside co-stars Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson). If being nominated for 3 Oscars (and countless other-times, including these 3 nominations, where he should have won the Oscar award for his performances). Most actors give each performance 100% of their dedication and efforts, Phoenix gives his performances 110% every time, and he is still yet to win an Oscar (go figure...).

3. Christian Bale

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Dark Knight (plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, 2008)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Dark Knight Rises (plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, 2012) - with a worldwide gross of $1.08 billion

Why Christian Bale? -

The year 2000 was a break-out year for Christian Bale, as his role that year as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho proved to be one his best on-screen performances to-date. However, it wasn't until 2005, when Batman Begins was released (starring Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman), that we starting looking at Bale as a Hollywood heavy-lifter. Bale's performance as the character, Batman was so good that it brought back the superhero character from the trash (where it had been left since the 90's) and it soon had a sequel, which was better than the first, and then it finished with a third and final instalment (starring Bale as Batman), clarifying Bale as a hot item (and the character, Batman) in Hollywood.

4. Heath Ledger

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Dark Knight (plays Joker, 2008)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Dark Knight (plays Joker, 2008) - with a worldwide gross of $1 billion

Why Heath Ledger? -

The late Heath Ledger was first brought to audiences (around the world) attention when he played the role of Patrick Verona in the teenage rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You, released in 1999. The film was the start of a great run for the Hollywood star, as he soon appeared as leading roles in The Patriot (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001) and the brilliant, The Dark Knight (2008). Point is, Ledger was a Hollywood-great, even before he starred as 'The Joker' in The Dark Knight, which got the attention of audiences everywhere, all around the world.

5. Daniel Day-Lewis

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Lincoln (plays Abraham Lincoln, 2012)

Biggest box office 'hit': Lincoln (plays Abraham Lincoln, 2012) - with a worldwide gross of $275.3 million

Why Daniel Day-Lewis? -

Daniel Day-Lewis has won a staggering 3 Oscar awards, which were won for best actor in a leading role in My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown Brown (1989), best performance by an actor in a leading role in There Will Be Blood (2007), and for best performance by an actor in a leading role in Lincoln (2012). Not to mention, Day-Lewis has won 2 Golden Globes, 4 BAFTA Awards, and countless others. Enough said.

6. Russell Crowe

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Gladiator (plays Maximus, 2000)

Biggest box office 'hit': Man of Steel (plays Jor-El, 2013) - with a worldwide gross of $668 million

Why Russell Crowe? -

Russell Crowe is one of Hollywood's most talented A-list actors, having proved his ability as an actor in such movies as Gladiator (playing Maximus), A Beautiful Mind (playing John Nash), and 3:10 to Yuma (2007, remake) in which he played his characters stunningly. Crowe is an actor of rare talent, making it a little disappointing that it has been a while since he has played a role worth his calibre, but other than that, Crowe is an actor worth watching out for in the movies.

7. Matt Damon

source: en.wikipedia.org

Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Bourne Identity (plays Jason Bourne, 2002)

Biggest box office 'hit': Saving Private Ryan (plays Private Ryan, 1998) - with a worldwide gross of $481.8 million

Why Matt Damon? -

Matt Damon had shown he was a rising star in Hollywood, after he wrote and starred as a leading role in 1997's release of Good Will Hunting. Since Damon's success in Good Will Hunting, he has gone on to play great roles in Hollywood, in such brilliant movies as The Bourne (film series), The Departed, and The Adjustment Bureau.

8. Will Smith

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): I Am Legend (plays Robert Neville, 2007)

Biggest box office 'hit': Independence Day (plays Captain Steven Hiller, 1996) - with a worldwide gross of $817.4 million

Why Will Smith? -

Although Will Smith has not yet won an Oscar, he has proven that he is most certainly Oscar-worthy, as his performances have a way of moving any (and all) human souls, when he plays an emotional role, which Smith has become well-known for doing. Smith has played roles in some great movies, but of the best emotionally moving performances he has played it would have to include The Pursuit of Happiness (playing Chris Gardner), I Am Legend (playing Robert Neville), and Seven Pounds (playing Ben).

9. Johnny Depp

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (plays Jack Sparrow, 2003)

Biggest box office 'hit': Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (plays Jack Sparrow, 2006) - with a worldwide gross of $1.07 billion

Why Johnny Depp? -

Johnny Depp is a show-stopper, with the ability to take on roles to make you laugh, make you gasp, make you cry, make you wonder, and much more. Johnny Depp is an all-round extremely likeable, great actor, whose starred in some of the biggest box office hits of all time. Depp is known for playing eccentric characters which are full of life, which is good considering these are the roles he suits best, and have become the roles he is best known for. Among the wonderful selection of Depp movies, the ones which are most memorable include Pirates of the Caribbean (franchise, playing Captain Jack Sparrow), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (playing Sweeney Todd), and Alice in Wonderland (playing Mad Hatter).

10. Leonardo DiCaprio

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Inception (plays Cobb, 2010)

Biggest box office 'hit': Titanic (plays Jack Dawson, 1997) - with a worldwide gross of $2.2 billion

Why Leonardo DiCaprio? -

Leonardo DiCaprio is Hollywood's go to A-list actor, when they are looking for a big-budget thriller, mystery, or drama, as DiCaprio has shown that he is considerably talented as an actor and can pull off some tricky roles in these categories. Among DiCaprio's best work as an actor, would include his performances in Titanic (playing Jack Dawson), The Departed (playing Billy), and Inception (playing Cobb). DiCaprio is handsome, a talented actor, smooth-talking, and a much-loved Hollywood A-lister, with the talent to go a long way in Hollywood's movies.

10 Greatest Movie Directors of the 21st Century

Granted, we are only midway into the second decade of the 21st Century, and are still yet to see many great movie directors enter into Hollywood, but anyway, here's a list of movie directors that wow at every turn. Or, have at least wowed at some point or other with their work as movie directors, through their movies released in the 21st Century.

These great visionaries have gotten our attention here at Augustus Worth, just as they will have gotten yours, as the ever-adapting Hollywood meets some of the most talented movie directors working in the 21st Century.

Starting with the best director, down to least best, here are the best Hollywood movie directors working today.

1. Steven Spielberg

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Lincoln (2012)

Biggest box office 'hit': Jurassic Park (2003) - with a worldwide gross of $983.8 million

Why Steven Spielberg? -

Steven Spielberg has become one of the most influential and popular Hollywood personalities alive and working today. Spielberg's directorial projects (movies) have changed Hollywood forever, from the movie which gave him a name in Hollywood, Jaws (1975), to films like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Jurassic Park (1993), Lincoln (2012), and all of the inbetween. Spielberg has directed countless movie greats which generations from now will enjoy, giving him the unquestionable place at the top-spot of our list.

2. James Cameron

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Avatar (2009)

Biggest box office 'hit': Avatar (2009) - with a worldwide gross of $2.8 billion

Why James Cameron? -

James Cameron is a director that most remember him as that guy who directed Titanic (1997), but until more recently, the line has remained the same, however, replacing Titanic with Avatar (2009). For Cameron's largely successful and beautifully directed masterpiece, Avatar, he has made his way to number two on our list for the greatest directors (in the 21st Century).

3. Peter Jackson

source: commons.wikimedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) - with a worldwide gross of $1.1 billion

Why Peter Jackson? -

Peter Jackson, the vision behind 'middle earth' on the big screen and director of the greatest fantasy epic film series of all time, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (both set in 'middle earth' and based on the novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien). Jackson's directorial career has been on a high since 2001, when he released the first Lord of the Rings ('The Fellowship of the Ring') film, and ever since he has surprised audiences with more great movies, like King King (2005), and the Hobbit (2012-2013-2014) films.

4. Joel & Ethan Coen (aka The Coen Brothers)

source: commons.wikimedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): No Country for Old Men (2007)

Biggest box office 'hit': True Grit (2010) - with a worldwide gross of $252.3 million

Why Joel & Ethan Coen? -

The Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, have gone from strength to strength with the quality of the movies that they are directing, being proof that they have some serious talent in the profession. Although the pair have not always seen strong commercial success and are still to hit a shockingly high number at the box office, they always direct great movies that become instant classics.

5. Martin Scorsese

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Departed (2006)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - with a worldwide gross of $392 million

Why Martin Scorsese? -

Martin Scorsese is responsible for the direction of some of Hollywood's greatest movies of the 21st Century, including the likes of Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), and many more. Scorses's talent as a director is extraordinary and audiences around the world are now recognising his talent, as in 2013 he directed The Wolf of Wall Street which has gone on to become his biggest commercial success, proving that Scorsese is bankable as a box office draw.

6. Ridley Scott

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Gladiator (2000)

Biggest box office 'hit': Gladiator (2000) - with a worldwide gross of $457.6 million

Why Ridley Scott? -

Ridley Scott is Hollywood's go-to man when it comes to action epics, and it has been that way ever since he directed the commercially and critically successful Gladiator movie in 2000. Some of Ridley's best work has also been some of the most surprising, as they were unexpectedly great, including Black Hawk Down (2001), Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and Robin Hood (2010). Ridley has had a great relationship working with one of the greatest A-list actors in Hollywood, Russell Crowe, who has starred in numerous Ridley Scott movies (as the lead man), including Gladiator (2000), A Good Year (2006), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), and Robin Hood (2010). All of Ridley's movies are superbly put together, making it a shame that his work is not being seen as much as we'd like, as he hasn't managed to commercially overtake Gladiator's worldwide gross with any of his other projects, bearing in mind that Gladiator was released more than 14 years ago.

7. Christopher Nolan

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Dark Knight (2008)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - with a worldwide gross of $1.08 billion

Why Christopher Nolan? -

Christopher Nolan hasn't directed as many movies as the previously spoken about directors on this list but he has certainly got our (and yours, most likely) attention, after the ultimate success of The Dark Knight (Batman) trilogy. However, Nolan's initial Hollywood success was hit-off after he directed the stunningly laid out Memento (2000) movie, which is one of the greatest movies ever made. Nolan keeps on surprises us, and we never know where he is going to take his work next, but one thing is for sure, and that is that each and every movie that Nolan directs is going to have the wow factor.

8. Tim Burton

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Big Fish (2003)

Biggest box office 'hit': Alice in Wonderland (2010) - with a worldwide gross of $1.03 billion

Why Tim Burton? -

Tim Burton is the king of dark family movies, a reputation that is certainly sticking, as more and more of his directorial pieces give us a darker insight into Burton's imagination. Not that anyone's complaining, as Burton always nails his movies, offering audiences an entirely new and entertaining experience when they enter the cinema theatres to see his movies. Burton may not have made it onto another websites top-10 list of the greatest directors (of the 21st Century), but that (in our opinion) is a mistake, as Burton is a rare and unique character in Hollywood that never disappoints.

9. M. Night Shyamalan

source: commons.wikimedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): Signs (2002)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Sixth Sense (1999) - with a worldwide gross of $672.8 million

Why M. Night Shyamalan? -

M. Night Shyamalan has garnered a bad reputation in recent years for a few box office disasters, which have set him back, but we know that Shyamalan will be back, and we hope it'll be in a big way. Some may be wondering why we have added Shyamalan to our list, but we believe that Shyamalan has a unique skill when it comes to directing movies and we believe that he truly is one of Hollywood greatest directors.

10. Wes Anderson

source: en.wikipedia.org
Greatest movie (released in 21st Century): The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Biggest box office 'hit': The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - with a worldwide gross of $174.6 million

Why Wes Anderson? -

Wes Anderson has been in a slump at the box office for some time, causing his status as a director in Hollywood to remain practically unknown. Until now. As in 2014, Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel brought in $174.6 million at the worldwide box office on an estimated $27 million budget, being Anderson's first movie to take in more than $100 million at the box office. However, that being said, Anderson's movies are always well received by critics and audiences alike, making it a surprise that his movies are not bigger hits at the box office. Anderson is another unique and wonderful director, which is why he has been added to our list.

However, if this was to be a top-20 greatest movie directors of the 21st Century, then these would be the following ten that we'd include.

11. David Fincher

Why? - Directs stunning movies every time that always have an edge of suspense. We love suspense.

12. Quentin Tarantino

Why? - Knows how to add violence into movies, without ruining the story. We love a good story, which is the point of making movies. Isn't it?

13. Ron Howard

Why? - Always offering movies for audiences which deliver greatness. And we love greatness... and 'The Grinch'.

14. Gore Verbinski

Why? - Delivers entertainment, which the whole family can enjoy. In saying this, we are of course referring to The Pirates of the Caribbean movies (1,2 and 3), which are without a doubt some of the greatest movies ever made. We forgive Verbinski for The Lone Ranger, which is what most might now add, but we enjoyed watching it, so for us Verbinski can do no wrong / has done no wrong.

15. Roland Emmerich

Why? - Directs 'epic' movies, all of which we love (yes, even Godzilla, 1998). For the record, we at Augustus Worth love 'epic' movies. But then again, who doesn't?

16. Guy Ritchie

Why? - Beautifully captures elements of comedy in action movies. Plus, we love Snatch. (2000) and Sherlock Holmes (2009).

17. Michael Mann

Why? - A Michael Mann movie- always a great movie. We only wish Mann would direct more movies, more often.

18. Wachowski Brothers

Why? - Unique directors, through-and-through. Plus, we loved The Matrix trilogy.

19. Michael Bay

Why? - The king of action (and explosions). Plus, among the great 'Transformers' debate, we love the Transformers movies.

20. George Lucas

Why? - Influential Hollywood director, producer and personality. Plus, his work directing the selected Star Wars movies which he directed were exceptionally good.

Biggest payout for 2014: Non-Stop

Liam Neeson is a strong contender on this list within the action/thriller genre, as he is earning his fortune from starring in smaller budget films which have a high profit margin. This tactic has been working wonders for the actor, as his Taken films are on their third installment this year and in early 2014, Liam starred as the leading man in Non-Stop, which had a budget of $50 million and has since made a total worldwide gross of an estimated $223 million.

7. Ben Affleck - $35,000,000 (million)

Biggest payout for 2014: Payment for upcoming Batman movies.

Ben Affleck has proven that he can direct after his more recent successes, The Town (2010) and Argo (2012), which he both directed and starred in. These commercial and critique successes have resulted in Ben being offered the role as Batman, taken over the predecessor, Christian Bale, who made the character famous and great again after starring in the Dark Knight trilogy as the dark superhero, Batman. Ever since the announcement that Ben Affleck would be taking over the role of Batman for upcoming projects, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League Part One and Justice League Part 2, fans of the comic superhero have taken to the internet in force to debate the choice for Ben Affleck as Batman. However, with a signed contract for the next 5 years with Warner Bros. Studios, it seems Ben is sitting comfortably with a very large upfront payment.

8. Christian Bale - $35,000,000 (million)

Biggest payout for 2014: Exodus: Gods and Kings

Christian Bale, the man who made Batman popular again in the Dark Knight trilogy, benefited hugely from the Batman movies, as they have seen his bank balance rise substantially and have paved way for Christian to star in more big budget projects, like the recently released Exodus: Gods and Kings, directed by Ridley Scott (director of Gladiator).

9. Will Smith - $32,000,000 (million)

Google's Movie 'Download' Sale is On

Happy New Year everyone. Today is a special day, as I will be listing the end of year (2014) movie-for-purchase deals at 'Google Play', consisting of all of the movies in the sale for under £4 (for download), which I think is a smashingly good price at that.

For those unaware of what 'Google Play' is- it is an online service which allows you to download (purchase / rent) and stream TV shows and movies; buy books, music, and apps. So basically Google's version of Apple's iTunes.

Google Play's 'Movie and TV' section is a lot like 'BlinkBox' (online TV show/movie streaming service), as it allows you to stream movies and TV shows for either purchase or rent. 'Google Play' can be accessed on a PC/laptop, tablet or smartphone/iPhone.
